Breast cancer, it is one of the most common cancers in Australia, with 1 in 8 Victorian women being diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime (Breast Screen Victoria). Having the right information available is vital for early detection and empowering women to feel in control of their health.
Recently during Women’s Health Week 2020 our own Breast Imaging Specialist, Radiologist Dr Alicia Wang, was invited to lead a virtual information session on breast cancer with Specialist Breast Surgeon Ms Ruth Bollard. The session was well received and covered what is involved in the screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Dr Wang explained the role of a diagnostic radiologist, and how mammography, ultrasound and biopsies can be used to diagnose breast cancer in patients.
Many myths were busted, and virtual attendees had the opportunity to ask any questions they may have had direct to the specialists, providing them access to industry experts.
Dr Wang said of the event “With approximately 55 people being diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia daily, the more information our industry can provide to educate the public on diagnosis and treatment, the greater chance we have of early detection, timely intervention and greater outcomes for patients in our communities”
